Tree Pictures

January-February 2001

Modelled using POV-ray, the freeware ray-tracer, and Gilles Tran's maketree macro. The maketree macro is extremely flexible - all I did to create the trees and bushes in these images was tweak various parameters. The textures are pretty much straight out of the samples given.

On top of these, I added my own (relatively simple) macros to generate randomly placed stands of trees and clumps or stands within that randomness, to give a fairly pleasingly organic distribution.

The full-size images are rendered at 1024x768 (and I've enjoyed putting them on my desktop). The polygon count for the scenes was typically high, between 0.5 and 2 million, and the images tookbetween 5 and 11 hours to render on a beefy P800 with 512MB RAM. I originally intended to use these for animations, but decided against that course of action.
